When I Am With You
(2020-2022)
… is a song-cycle of ten love songs, featuring the poetry of Amy Lowell (1874-1925). Each song, a moment in time, follows the loose narrative of a flourishing relationship, bud to bloom — from the thrill of young love to the building of a nurturing home life.
Lowell wrote many of her love poems for her lover, Ada Dwyer Russell, and the poetry chosen for this song cycle primarily remains gender-neutral. In this way, I hope these songs become part of a growing canon of works celebrating LGBT2QIA+ love.
This collection of songs was composed, by request, for fellow Central Washington University student and singer, Elizabeth Watkins.
